Your Guide’s Visit to The Sterling Residences
Your Guide visited The Sterling on Tuesday, June 15, for a Broker Re-Introduction event. The Board of Directors has made improvements to the facilities, managed to increase owner occupancy, and improved the financial health of the community.
In Part 3 I stopped by a couple of units for sale in the building that were open on Tuesday. These units could be ideal investor units, and the convertible (junior one-bedroom) already has a renter in the unit that would definitely like to remain as a renter for the new owner.

Take a walking tour of Boystown with Your Guide and YoChicago’s Joe Askins. Part 5 – The homes on Melrose
Your Guide went on a walking tour of the Boystown Neighborhood with YoChicago’s Joe Askins last week. We walked past the Nettlehorst School just as school let out which offered the perfect opportunity to talk about the transformation of the neighborhood from the Gay Ghetto into the Premium North Side Neighborhood that it is today.
As we continued west on Melrose, we talked about all the different styles of housing offered on Melrose – from modest to deluxe.
Diversions: Housewalks take the place of Street Fests for fall season
Though there may be a few straggling neighborhood festivals coming this fall (think Halloween and a few Art Fests) the season for festivals draws to a close to make way for the Fall-Favorite: House Walks.
Though not in Chicago, your guide is intrigued by the Nosey Neighbor Housewalk in Homewood and Flossmoor with a Lustron House on tour. The Lustron Company built a couple thousand completely steel fabricated homes throughout the US after World War II ended.
These homes feature steel walls, steel panes for exteriors, steel roofs, all fabricated at the factory and snapped together on-site. The powder coated finish is rumored to last for decades, and the example on tour has its original finish.
Other Bungalows and Cape Cod’s are featured, but the Lustron Home is what would drag your guide out to the nether-regions of Chicago Suburbs.
The Nosey Neighbor House Walk of Homewood-Flossmoor is September 19, 10:00 am to 3:00 in south suburban Homewood and Flossmoor. Info call 708-747-7734.
Edgewater Housewalk on September 20, noon to 4:00 pm.
Closer to home is a tour of Historic homes in the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago.
Nine houses are on tour in Edgewater this Sunday including a pair designed by renowned architect Walter Burley Griffin. Begin your tour at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church at 1244 W. Thorndale.
